I was reading a novel yesterday, and I came across this sentence: “The food is very delicious.” As a proofreader, I knew it was grammatically incorrect. Why is it incorrect? The word "delicious" is a non-gradable adjective. Gradable adjectives are those that can be compared using words like "big," "bigger," "biggest." You can’t say "deliciouser/more delicious" or "deliciousest" – or can you? (LOL) So, it’s wrong to say "very delicious." Other non-gradable adjectives that don’t take "very" include "dead," "ancient," "awful," "boiling," "enormous," and "excellent." We only use "very" with gradable adjectives, such as "tall," "fast," "thin," etc. However, one can say "the food is absolutely/really delicious."
