  Some Nigerian words were recently added to the Oxford dictionary. The Oxford University Press published its tenth edition by adding 29 new Nigerian English words and expressions, including words derived from the Nigerian languages of Hausa and Yoruba as well as a number of unique Nigerian coinages.  📌 BUKA- It refers to a roadside restaurant or street stall that sells local food at low prices. I'm in hospital, or I'm in the hospital: which is correct? I came across these sentences while editing a manuscript for a client. The two sentences are grammatically correct, but are semantically (meaning) different. 📌 Firstly, I'm in hospital is used when you are a patient, that is, you are there—in hospital—to get some treatment. For example—a conversation between a son and his mother. Mother: where are you, son? Son: I had a car crash mom, so I'm in hospital to get treated. 📌 Secondly, I'm in the hospital is used to mean when a visitor, probably a relative or a friend, goes to visit the sick person in the hospital. For example, a conversation between a father and his first daughter. Father: I just heard that your younger brother got injured in the car crash. Bachelor has several meanings, but in this context, A bachelor is a man who is not and has never been married. Secondly, what is the meaning of the word SPINSTER? Spinster is a term referring to an unmarried woman who is OLDER than what is perceived as the prime age range during which women usually marry. It can also indicate that a woman is considered unlikely to ever marry. The term originally denoted a woman whose occupation was to spin.  Thirdly, what is the meaning of the word BACHELORETTE? A bachelorette is a young unmarried woman. From this viewpoint, I can arguably say that a bachelor is a man who has not been married and is not cohabiting.   Draconian An adjective to describe something that is excessively harsh and severe. Derives from Draco, a 7th-century Athenian law scribe under whom small offenses had heavy punishments; prescribing death for almost every offense. E.g. The Buhari regime is obviously draconian on university students.

 𝗗𝗢𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗩𝗦. 𝗧𝗪𝗢-𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 We often use the word double date to mean when a man cheats on his wife by having an affair with another woman, which is incorrect in terms of meaning.  The appropriate word for that meaning is two-time.  According to Cambridge Dictionary, two-time means to deceive someone you are having a relationship with by having a secret sexual relationship with someone else at the same time.   Countless English speakers as a second language use the word “double date” in the wrong way, due to the individual meaning of the word.  They assume that “double date” means when a man deceitfully dates two girls at the same time, which fundamentally wrong. Double Date: (Noun)- When a man with a fiancée cunningly has another girl without the knowledge of the fiancée—Wrong Double Date: (Noun)- it's an activity (such as going to the movies or going out to eat) that two couples (A wife and a husband, a wife and a husband) do together.  Technically, “Double date” is an occasion when two couples meet to go to a film, restaurant, etc. together. For example, Kate and Jane went out on a double date with Jim and Karen.
