Celebrant vs. Host

Aʀᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴇʟᴇʙʀᴀɴᴛ ᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴏsᴛ?

Is it correct to describe somebody who is throwing a party, a birthday party or such occasions as CELEBRANT?

For example.

Ladies and gentlemen, let us sing a happy birthday song to the celebrant.

Celebrant as used in Nigeria means somebody who is celebrating. But strictly speaking, in Native Standard English, the celebrant is not the one who is celebrating.

📌 CELEBRANT

A celebrant is a priest who conducts a Mass or a Religious ceremony, or the person that direct and executes the activities of an occasion or a ceremony.

According to Oxford

dictionary, 9th  edition,  a celebrant is a person who performs a rite, especially a priest at the Eucharist.

For example

1. The celebrant conducted a beautiful wedding ceremony in the serene garden.

2. As the celebrant of the religious service, she offered words of comfort to the grieving congregation.

3. The celebrant led the graduation ceremony with enthusiasm and pride.

N.B: I am not the saying the word Celebrant is not grammatical, but it is not standard in such context. In North America the word CELEBRANT is used to mean HOST.

📌 HOST

The 'owner' of the occasion is the HOST of the occasion.  In the context of events or gatherings, the host is the person or organization responsible for organizing and overseeing the event. They may also provide hospitality to guests.

For example:

1. Sarah was the gracious host of the dinner party, welcoming guests with warm smiles and delicious appetizers.

2. As the host of the charity fundraiser, David worked tirelessly to ensure that every detail was perfect, from the venue decorations to the entertainment lineup.

3. The hotel served as the host for the international conference, accommodating delegates from around the world with luxurious accommodations and state-of-the-art facilities.

In conclusion,

📌 Ladies and Gentlemen, let us sing a happy birthday song to the CELEBRANT - Non-Standard
